The following post on RPG.net has some interesting ideas about magic-users in D&D
MU tweaks
Basically, you can give up the power to cast a spell to make a permanent magic talisman which can cast a spell 3 times per day. So, a first level mage could give up his single spell slot in exchange for a talisman that could cast 3 sleep spells per day, for example. The good news is better fire power, the bad news is he loses the ability to change spells for that slot and he risks having the talisman lost or stolen.
The same sort of trade could be made for a "Sanctum" a sort of magic HQ, or a Familiar (of various sorts or powers).
There are more details, of course, but it is really pretty cool.
Any plans to implement this? I missed the Staff of Shining stars that Septimus used. I think it would be great to bring these back.
ReplyDeleteThe only drawback is that the bad guys will have these and they may be stolen. Can other mages use someone else's' fetish.
Other mages (and for some powers in the talisman--anybody else) can certainly steal and use them. I think the original writer had in mind "The One RIng" as an example, where Sauron put his power into it, and other people could use it when he lost it.
ReplyDeleteSo, we won't be able to create characters in our current ACKS game that use this mechanic? Or you are saying that we must manufacture our own custom character class from the rulebook before creating a character that uses this mechanic in our current ACKS game?
ReplyDeleteI hadn't really decided about implementing it yet. If you want to, we can certainly do so. I hadn't gotten past the "it's a neat idea" stage yet.
ReplyDeleteThe real question I would have, especially with the talisman is if the spell inside 'grows' with the power of the mage who created it. So if, say, a fireball spell is imbued into this talisman by a 5th level wizard, does it get more powerful when the wizard gets to a higher level?
ReplyDeleteHehe, if we only had a spell caster in the group to use this with.
