Replacement Characters

I thought that we'd need a rule for replacement characters.  We used the following rule during "Return of the Trolls" and thought that it would work for AD&D too:

When a character is killed or retires during the course of a campaign, his replacement will begin with a certain portion of the original character’s Experience points.

The base value is 50% of the original character’s total, modified as follows:

Manner of Character’s Death
            Cowardly or Pathetic                          -15%
            Ordinary                                              +0%
            Totally Metal                                        +15%
The determination above is made by majority vote of those at the table.

Character’s Funeral
            Character becomes undead               -35%
Character’s body is eaten                   -25%
            Body not recovered                             -15%
            Quick Burial                                        +0%
            Elaborate Funeral                               +10%
Most Expensive Funeral So Far         +20%

ON THE OTHER HAND:

If we wanted to play hardball, like real men, I suppose we could make replacement characters start at first level.    This would encourage the cultivation of henchmen as prospective replacements.

  1. I like the idea of the rewards for awesome deaths, since I've gotten that a couple times before I believe. I think I got most metal death with both my characters in the trolls campaign.

I have a question in regards to the character's funeral: Is it possible to have a funeral for the character, even if the body is not recovered?

Also, suppose the character who died had money set aside to pay for his own funeral (say, like the max for his level, if he hadn't used his 'wuldor' at that session). Could that player then count that extra bit of money spent, and experience received, towards getting an elaborate funeral?

I had a big thing written up about the player with the dead character getting screwed, if the rest of the party didn't feel like throwing them a funeral (or recovering a body). But then I remembered that funerals for comrades (which I read as pretty much other players characters) always reward experience to the people who spend the money throwing the funeral (up to their max). So it's pretty much in the entire party's best interests to throw as big an effing funeral as people can afford if another player dies.

I like this idea, as it kinda plays along with the thought that perhaps people are training somebody to take over for them when they die.
