Adjustments to Thieves

Thieves just totally blow in ACKS, RC D&D and even to a degree in AD&D.   I'm proposing the following adjustments to the RC D&D thief:

Hit Die:  increase from d4 to d6

Dex Bonus:  add 5% times DEX bonus to most Thief skills

Back Stab:  in RC it is limited to x2 forever.   I propose making it match other forms of D&D:
level 1-4   x2
level 5-8  x3
level 9-12  x4
level 13+  x5

  1. How about if instead of using x2/x3/x4 damage, you add a 1D6 for each advance like 3e? For that matter, why not give thieves and assassins the ability to use their backstab when flanking like 3e?

  2. I think that is the opposite of the effect I'm looking for. I want the backstab to do more damage and be more spectacular, and the doubling of the bonus damage is more likely to achieve that.

Also, the flanking sneak attack turns the stab into a regular tactical move used ubiquitously instead of a carefully set up action with a big payout.

    1. I suppose this is why I never play thieves. I would prefer a basic tactic over a set up action. Either way. I thought you were trying to fix the back stab critical hit problem.
